Library Researcher Registration for 2026
- In 2026 we will not be offering our traditional Library Desk rentals during June, July, and August due to long term issues with air conditioning and roof leaks in the Lillie building. As we cannot ensure safe or comfortable conditions in the stacks during the warmest summer days, we will be offering registration as a Library Researcher without reserved desks or locking file cabinets. When the stacks are comfortable enough to work in, anyone may use any desk, but desks will not be reserved.
- The Bay and Grass Reading Rooms are air conditioned, and are available to work in (when not in-use as a classroom.)
- If you would like to register as a Library Researcher, this is possible for the length of time you will be at MBL this summer for a flat administrative fee of $50. (below chart also shows off season desk rental information)
- Individuals renting space and registering as researchers in the MBLWHOI Library agree to uphold MBL policy. Any individual who is found to have violated MBL Policy may be asked to leave and forfeit their space in the Library without a refund.
A Library Researcher must:
- have an active appointment at MBL (Education or Research)
- or: a faculty, postdoctoral fellow, or student with an active academic or research appointment at an institution of higher education, government or non-profit research organization.
- or: a retired faculty or researcher at an institution of higher education, government or non-profit research organization.

Library OFFICE rental registration information for 2026:
- You must be a current MBL Scientist with an active appointment at MBL.
- Few offices are available for rental.
- Note that library offices are intended for scholarly purposes in a quiet library setting.
- The offices are not sound proofed, and offices may not be suitable for those whose work includes extended conversations or ZOOM calls. Rentals are subject to availability at any given time. One month rental minimum.

Privileges for Library Researchers and Office renters:
- Physical access to the Lillie Library 7 am to 11 pm
- Book borrowing for the duration of researcher/office rental
- Access to MBL Archives and Rare Books collections by appointment
- Reference assistance by Library staff members
- Wireless internet access
- Access to electronic resources on-site at Library workstations
- Interlibrary loan services
- Eligibility for a red MBL parking sticker
- Eligibility to request housing at MBL* (*not July 1 – Sept. 1, see below.)
The following services are not available to those renting desks or offices:
- Remote access to electronic resources
